New Moms Can Use Affirmations in Their Daily Routine to Reduce Stress and Promote a Positive Mindset

Practicing positive affirmations as part of a daily routine is a great way to help moms take time for themselves, recognize their worth, and build resilience for the demands of motherhood.

At The Matrescence®, we believe in a whole-person approach to health and mental wellness. All too often we hear about mamas who are not slowing down enough to listen to their own needs and positive affirmations are a great way to reinforce the importance of self-love and care, which is so important for moms! If you have been feeling stressed or are looking for simple self-help tips to improve your mental health in motherhood, you’ll be glad you landed here!

As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, I understand the value in mindfulness and meditation and how small shifts in habit and mindset can make a huge difference in a mother’s journey to feeling like herself again and fostering a growth mindset. The benefits of meditation and mindfulness cannot be understated.

I have curated this list of positive statements for mamas in every stage of motherhood. Whether you are trying to conceive your first child, newly postpartum, or a veteran mama navigating changes in your parenting journey, use these affirmations to incorporate in your mental health toolkit.

How affirmations work

Affirmations can help by serving as an important tool for new mothers, encouraging the development of a positive mindset throughout the joyful (and sometimes tumultuous) journey of motherhood. Engaging in affirmations works by leveraging the brain’s neuroplasticity, effectively rewiring thought patterns towards positivity. This conscious shift towards uplifting thoughts and beliefs enables new moms to enhance their confidence, overcome anxiety, and strengthen their connection with their baby. The practice of repeating a phrase or affirmation counteracts self-doubt and effectively decreases stress levels. Furthermore, affirmations promote essential self-care, averting burnout and fostering mental resilience. Through the mechanism of positive self-talk and its influence on the brain, new mothers can more smoothly navigate the challenges of this distinct phase, fully enjoying the joys and rewards of motherhood and fostering optimal well-being. Looking for affirmations to incorporate into your motherhood journey? Look no further! Here is a list of positive affirmations for mothers in various seasons of motherhood.

How to Practice Your Affirmations

As busy and often overwhelmed mamas, it can be really hard to find time for ourselves! Affirmations are short and effective and can be a powerful way to increase your mental resilience and build mental power within. They can be seamlessly integrated into your daily routine to help manage stress, foster a positive mindset, and enhance self-esteem as a mama. Start by setting aside a few quiet moments each day, perhaps early in the morning before the household wakes up, during a midday break, or as part of your routine before going to bed. Use this time to focus on your breathing and recite your chosen affirmations aloud or in your mind. You can also incorporate affirmations into everyday activities, such as while feeding your baby, brushing your teeth, or even doing household chores, by mentally repeating positive statements about your strength and capability as a mother. Writing affirmations on sticky notes and placing them in visible spots around your home or setting reminders on your phone to take a brief affirmation break can also serve as effective reminders. The key is consistency and allowing yourself to genuinely feel the positive emotions associated with the affirmations, transforming overwhelming moments into opportunities for empowerment and resilience.

How to Create Your Own Meaningful Affirmations

Creating your own powerful motherhood affirmations begins with identifying the unique challenges and joys you experience as a mother. Reflect on the aspects of motherhood that you find most rewarding and those that test your strength. From this reflection, craft positive, present tense statements that resonate with your personal journey. For example, if patience is a challenge, an affirmation could be, “I am calm and patient with my child, even on tough days” or one of our favorites at The Matrescence®, “Peace Begins with ME”. Make your affirmations specific, affirmative, and rooted in truth, focusing on the qualities you wish to embody and the positive outcomes you desire. Repeat these affirmations daily, especially during moments you feel stressed-out or experiencing self-doubt, to anchor your mindset in positivity and strength and to leave you feeling confident and resilient to the inevitable stressors of parenthood. Remember, the most powerful affirmations are those that speak deeply to your own experiences and aspirations as a mother and help you break negative self-talk. Once you get the hang of using daily affirmations, your subconscious mind will be better able to leverage these tools in times of stress, challenge negative internal dialogue, and build confidence in your unique matrescence, or monumental transformation you go through when becoming a mother.
